The Pit and the Pendulum
The story takes place during the height of the Spanish Inquisition. When the beautiful and kind-hearted Maria unintentionally shouts out in horror at the public flogging of a child, she is mistakenly labeled a witch and imprisoned. Even while Maria's husband, Antonio, tries to save her, Torquemada, the Grand Inquisitor, decides to punish Maria with torture since she has aroused his desire for the woman she loves. The story is loosely based on the classic short story by Edgar Allen Poe.
