An Idaho Falls youngster from the middle class becomes a Mormon missionary in the remote and exotic Tongan island kingdom in the 1950s. John H. Groberg travels across the Pacific to serve as a missionary. A beloved family and Jean, the love of his life, are all that he leaves behind. John communicates with "the girl back home" via letters and reflections, and her letters lift his spirits while he's going through tough times. Language limitations, physical hardship and deep-seated skepticism are all obstacles John must overcome in order to earn the confidence and affection of the Tongan people he has come to serve.
