The story of Selah, a little girl who was born into an oppressive cult known as the Flock, is told in a way that is both eerie and terrifying in this book. The members of the Flock, who are entirely women and female children, reside in a rural compound and are headed by a single male member of the group who is simply referred to as Shepherd. Selah, a girl who is on the verge of entering her teenage years, is granted the tremendous privilege of participating in the sacred ceremony of the birthing of the lambs, upon which they depend for survival. During this event, Selah has something that is both shocking and otherworldly happen to her. She begins to have unusual visions that cause her to question her own reality as well as all that the Shepherd has taught her and her sisters over the course of their lives.
