The occult sciences and esotericism of the late 19th century were widely popular in St. Petersburg. Olivia Reed, a British medium on a tour of the Russian Empire, comes in Moscow and draws crowds to her public spiritual meetings. At this period, the city is plagued by a string of ritualistic and mystifying killings. On the streets, young women are being kidnapped and their disfigured bodies are turning up all over the city. Rostov, a young police officer, and Ganin, his assistant, conduct the inquiry. Every time there is a new victim, the situation becomes more and more complicated.
