The Long, Hot Summer

Before arriving in Frenchman's Bend, Ben Quick was expelled from another town for setting fire to a barn in an apparent act of retaliation. Ben gets hired by Will Varner, who owns most of the businesses in Frenchman's Bend, to work at his store. Will thinks his son, Jody, who runs the store, lacks ambition and fears that he won't be able to get pregnant by his wife, Eula. A schoolteacher's daughter, Clara (whom Will feels will never get married), is his only hope for happiness. Ben Quick strikes him as a potential husband for Clara, and he sets out to find a way to introduce some new blood into the mix.
