The Last Tycoon
Taking place during Shanghai's gangster era of the early 1900s, THE LAST TYCOON follows CHENG (Chow Yun-Fat), a young man who is set up by the chief of police (Sammo Hung) and forced to leave his home and QIU (Monica Mok), the woman he loves, to start a new life. Following his escape from prison, CHENG quickly and viciously climbs the ranks of Shanghai's criminal underworld, eventually rising to become one of the city's most powerful mob bosses in the city's history. As a result of his rising renown and notoriety, CHENG finds himself trapped between the approaching Japanese army and the cunning local secret agency. Things are only made worse when he runs into QIU, the love of his life, and her writer husband, who only adds to the confusion. What happens to love as a generation comes to the end of its life cycle?
