In the fourth installment of the series, "leaf gobblers" consume all of the vegetation in Great Valley, displacing Littlefoot, the young brontosaurus, and the other dinosaurs. During migration, Littlefoot and his companions decide to take matters into their own hands by crossing the "great water" to an uncharted island in response to disputes among the grownups. There, they see an old buddy from The Land Before Time II, Chomper, the Tyrannosaurus rex, who must defend the group from his own predatory parents. As the series has done since its inception, there is a great deal of drama in this episode, and it depicts imperfect grownups.
