Mary Bee Cuddy, a devout Christian with a strong sense of self-reliance, is tasked with the responsibility of rescuing three pioneer women who have gone insane as a result of the arduous life they have had on the American frontier. As she travels with the women to Iowa in a covered wagon, she quickly learns how difficult the journey is going to be and decides to enlist the assistance of a wayward vagrant by the name of George Briggs. The improbable duo and the three women head in the direction of the east, where they are met by a preacher and his wife who have volunteered to take in the women. But before it, the party will have to go through the harsh Nebraska Territories, which are characterized by desolate beauty, psychological peril, and ongoing danger.
