On a rainy night in the New Mexico Desert, college students Jim Halsey and his girlfriend Grace Andrews pick up a hitchhiker named John Ryder. The stranger turns out to be a psychopath while they are in their car. He threatens the young couple with a knife, but Jim is able to throw him out of the car onto the road. The next morning, John is in another car, and the young couple sees him.
