Former assassin Jim Terrier, who fled the Congo eight years ago after killing the country's mining minister, has returned, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and digging wells to atone for his violent past. An assassination attempt leads Terrier to fly to London to find out who and why wants him dead. His quest brings him face to face with Annie, a former love of his who is now married to an oily businessman with ties to the continent of Africa.
