With his reelection campaign in full swing, the corrupt politician Paul Madvig resolves to clean up his act and distance himself from criminal Nick Varna, instead forming an alliance with the reformist Ralph Henry. Paul's right arm, Ed Beaumont, discovers the body of Taylor Henry, Ralph's gambler son and the lover of Paul's sister Opal, after he is murdered. Nick leverages the Observer's financial condition to force publisher Clyde Matthews to use the newspaper to promote suspicions that Paul Madvig might have killed Taylor. Nick Observer.
