The Girls in the Band
Women have long been marginalized as singers and pianists in the jazz world. Little is known about the enormously talented female trumpeters, saxophonists, and drummers who struggled for recognition but were barred from meaningful employment by men who didn't want women on their bandstands. This film follows the history of all-girl bands and the struggles of the few who broke through the male barriers, all the way to the present day, where brilliantly gifted young women compete with the best jazz musicians of their generation.
