Russian geography teacher Victor Sluzhkin takes a job teaching geography at a high school in his hometown of Perm (in the Ural Mountains) and soon finds himself intoxicated and overwhelmed by his newfound role in the education of youngsters. Sluzhkin, the student nickname for Geographer, embarks on a rafting trip through the Urals in an attempt to escape the monotonous, depressing, and draining reality of Russian provincial life. Faced with nature's various nasty surprises and the wild, adventure-seeking teens that accompany him, Geographer is on the verge of discovering his own identity and the truth about himself.
