Harry Caul, a surveillance expert, is recruited to follow a young couple by a mysterious client's harsh aide. Caul and his assistant Stan track the couple across San Francisco's Union Square and manage to record a strange chat between them. Caul becomes obsessed with the resulting tape, trying to discern if the pair is in danger, haunted by recollections of a prior case that ended horribly.
