The majority of the people in town believe that Sheriff Calder is essentially a puppet of wealthy oilman Val Rogers. Because he is having an affair with Reeves' wife, Rogers' son is anxious when he learns that local baddie Bubber Reeves has escaped prison and gotten away with it. Reeves appears to be feared by a large number of people in the community. Calder's goal is to bring Reeves back into the country alive and undamaged. To get justice, Calder will have to contend with the strong Rogers on the one hand and mob violence on the other.
