Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, which Brock Yates staged as a protest against the then-current U.S. speed restriction of 55 mph, served as the inspiration for a cross-country road race. Baker, who rode his motorcycle across the country in the roaring 20's, was called Cannonball. It's based on the ruses used by real Cannonball racers over the course of the event's existence.
