Strike
The film chronicles the suppression of a strike by workers at a plant in pre-revolutionary Russia in 1903. The film is well known for a sequence near the end in which footage of cattle being slaughtered is juxtaposed with footage of the strike being put down violently, however there are several other instances in the film when animals are used as metaphors for various persons' circumstances. Another recurring subject in the film is collectivism vs individualism, which was regarded as a western film convention.
