The American POWs in Stalag 17 have a sad Christmas in 1944. The men in Barracks 4, who are all sergeants, have to deal with a serious problem: there seems to be a security hole. The Germans always seem to know about escape attempts before they happen. In the most recent attempt, Manfredi and Johnson walked right into a trap and died. Some people in Barracks 4, like Duke, think it's clear who the leaker is: J.J. Sefton, a wheeler-dealer who doesn't mind trading with the guards and who seems to have things and privileges that no other prisoner has. Sefton says he didn't tell the Germans anything and makes it clear that he has no plans to try to get away. He wants to stay as comfortable as he can during the war, but that doesn't include spying for the Germans.
