After being absent for a number of years, the hard-drinking author Dave Hirsh eventually makes his way back to his hometown. Dave's brother, who is eager for him to find a wife and start a family, puts him in touch with Gwen French, an English teacher. Moody Dave has resentment against his brother and spends his time hanging out with Bama Dillert, a professional gambler who enjoys staying out late and partying. Dave's ire is growing as he is torn between Ginny Morehead, a carefree woman who loves him, and Gwen, a woman who admires him.
