After his parents divorced a year ago, Jared Marshall's life fell apart. Not only does his father prioritize his profession, but his mother uproots him from Iowa to accept a job in California. When Jared's class writes letters to US troops in Bosnia from the closest base, kindhearted Sergeant First Class Vince Carerra, who grew up fatherless and divorced because his wife wasn't faithful while he was on tour of duty, takes to the kid and begins a correspondence with 'fatherly' advice. Once his unit returns to Fort Sebastian, Vince pays a visit to Jared's house and is greeted with open arms. Vince becomes Jared's personal baseball instructor and, with the help of Cupid, his mother's lover, but only on the condition that he not commit because he is likely to be redeployed.
