Alexander Pechersky, a Soviet-Jewish lieutenant in the Red Army at the time, is the film's protagonist. Sobibor concentration camp was used by the Nazis to murder Jews in gas chambers in October 1943 when he was caught. A worldwide insurrection of Polish and Western European political prisoners was planned by Alexander in under three weeks. Because it was the sole successful rebellion during the war, the biggest number of prisoners were able to escape from a Nazi concentration camp during this revolt.
