Ivan falls in love with Marichka, the killer's daughter, in a Carpathian village. When tragedy strikes her, his grief lasts months before he rejoins the colorful life around him, marrying Palagna. She wants children, but his thoughts are on his lost love. To regain his attention, Palagna tries sorcery and falls under the sorcerer's spell, publicly humiliating Ivan, who then fights the sorcerer.
