Jackie Moon is the owner, promoter, head coach, and star player for the Flint Michigan Tropics of the American Basketball Association (ABA). The National Basketball Association (NBA) intends to merge with the top ABA clubs at the conclusion of the 1976 season, before the demise of the ABA. Only the top four teams will continue, and the bottom teams will fold. The Tropics are the poorest club in the league, and in order for them to qualify for the NBA, Jackie Moon must unite his team and begin winning. The only problem is that Jackie Moon is not the coach and basketball superstar he believes he is. Jackie Moon must encourage his squad to win fourth place in the playoffs in order to save his team from annihilation and leave his mark on the city.
