Dr. Michele Wolf, a Jewish lady who was held captive by the Nazis in one of their concentration camps for the whole of World War II, eventually makes her way back to her home in Paris after the war is over. In her absence, her husband, the dashing gigolo and chess master Stanislaw Pilgrin, has been carrying on an affair with her stepdaughter, Fabi. She is blissfully unconscious of this fact.
