Another Morley child has gone missing while walking home from school nine years after the first. Maurice Jobson is compelled to recall the very similar abduction of Clare Kemplay, who was found dead in 1974, and the following imprisonment of local kid Michael Myshkin, which took place in the same year. Unwitting catalyst for Jobson to begin correcting some wrongs is John Piggott, a washed-up local solicitor who believes Myshkin is innocent.
