Noboru Yasumoto is dissatisfied with his first appointment after medical school, which places him in a rural clinic run by the brusque doctor Red Beard. Yasumoto had hoped for an easy position as the personal physician of an affluent family. Yasumoto rebels in multiple ways, but Red Beard proves to be a sage and patient instructor. He ultimately assigns his student to care for a prostitute rescued from a local brothel, after gradually introducing him to the unglamorous side of the job.
