Mark Kaminsky gets fired from the FBI for mistreating a suspect. He eventually becomes the sheriff of a small town in North Carolina. FBI Chief Harry Shannon, whose son was murdered by a mobster named Patrovina, enlists Kaminsky in a personal vendetta in exchange for readmission into the FBI if Patrovina is brought down.
