Claireece "Precious" Jones is a young African American woman who is 16 years old and lives in Harlem in the year 1987. She was born into a life that no one would ever choose for themselves. She is carrying her father's child for the second time, but he is not there in her life. At home, she is forced to serve her mother, who is an angry lady who verbally and physically assaults her. Precious has made it to the ninth grade with high grades despite the fact that she cannot read, and school is a hectic place.
