Rick Bowman, a drag racing street punk, catches the eye of shrewd businessman Grant Willard. Willard bails him out of jail and offers him a job as a stock car driver. Bowman accepts and enters the demolition derby-related world of "figure eight" racing. Hawk Sidney, the cocky hotshot, reigns supreme on the figure eight track. Bowman and Sidney clash, and Hawk's attractive friend Jolene succumbs to Bowman's charm. Bowman's attention is drawn to Ellen McLeod, the wife of champion racer Ed McLeod. Bowman's regard for his friends diminishes as he rises through the ranks, giving way to an obsession with becoming the best.
