Mr. Meacham, an elderly woodcarver, has charmed local children for years with tales about a fearsome dragon who lives deep in the Pacific Northwest woods. These legends are nothing more than fantastic tales to his daughter, Grace, who works as a forest ranger... until she meets Pete, a mystery 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a big, green dragon named Elliott. Elliott resembles the dragon from Mr. Meacham's stories, according to Pete's descriptions. Grace sets out to discover where Pete comes from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon with the help of Natalie, an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack owns the local timber mill.
