Paths of Glory

General Broulard, during World War I, tells his subordinate, General Mireau, to attack a German trench position in exchange for a promotion. Mireau orders his own subordinate, Colonel Dax, to arrange the attack, despite the fact that the operation is suicidal. General Mireau requests the court-martial of three random soldiers to save face when the mission fails.
