During the Japanese rule of Hong Kong in the 1940s, schoolteacher Fang Lan becomes engaged in the resistance operations of the local guerilla group Dongjiang, which is based in the city. After supporting the resistance organization in the rescue of novelist Mao Dun, Fang is approached by one of the group's captains, Blackie Lau, and is offered a position. Fang's mother agrees to stand in for her as a courier for a mission, and she gets arrested as a result. In order to save her mother, Fang finds herself resorting to a childhood sweetheart who has now taken a position at the headquarters of the Japanese occupation.
