During the Japanese occupation of Korea, Jun-shik, who works on Tatsuo's grandfather's farm, dreams of competing in the Tokyo Olympics as a marathon runner. Tatsuo is also training to run a marathon, and the two become rivals as a result. Both of them are forced to join the military when the war breaks out. After being promoted to chief of defense in Jun-squad, shik's Tatsuo comes up with an idea, but it proves to be a failure. The Soviets have captured Jun-shik and Tatsuo. They try to flee, but the Germans catch up with them and compel them to separate. They reunite on the beaches of Normandy in 1944.
