With a long history of intrigue with religion and considerable experience dealing with unusual, distasteful, and surprising human behavior, the beguilingly unpretentious Theroux will not take no for an answer when his request to join the Church's headquarters is denied. Inspired by the Church's use of filmmaking techniques and supported by ex-members, Theroux employs actors to recreate instances that members claim they witnessed in an attempt to gain a better understanding of how the organization operates. In an odd twist, it is revealed that the Church is also filming a documentary about Louis Theroux.
