Monte Walsh
Monte Walsh and Chet Rollins have been cowhands for a long time, doing whatever ranch work comes their way. However, there is "nothing they can't accomplish from a horse." Their lives are divided between months spent on the range and trips into town on occasion. Monte has been in a long-term relationship with prostitute Martine Bernard, while Chet has become enchanted by the widow who owns the hardware store where Monte works. Until one of the hands, Shorty Austin, quits his job and becomes involved in rustling and murders, their days are filled with camaraderie and competition with the other cowboys. Then Monte and Chet discover that their life on the range have been irreversibly altered.
