Moffie
The film Moffie (a pejorative term for a gay man that originates from the Afrikaans language) is based on the book of the same name written by André Carl van der Merwe. It tells the narrative of Nicholas van der Swart, who realizes at a very young age that he is unique. In spite of his best efforts, he is unable to live up to the image of a manly man that is required of him by his family and by his heritage. At the age of19, he was forced to enlist in the South African army and found that every one of his sensibilities was being insulted by a system that was on its way out but was still in place. This is a story that has been a long time coming about the mental and physical pain that was faced by an uncountable number of young men during the South African border struggle against communism.
