Mayerling
Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria disputes with his father, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, over the implementation of progressive plans for their kingdom. Rudolf soon realizes he was born at the wrong moment in a country that does not recognize the need for social transformation. The Prince of Wales, eventually to become King Edward VII of the United Kingdom, provides comedic relief. Rudolf seeks sanctuary from a loveless marriage with Princess Stéphanie by having a mistress, Baroness Maria Vetsera. Their unexpected death in Mayerling, the royal family's hunting lodge, is shrouded in mystery.
