Alice and David Chaplin relocate with their children to a gated exclusive housing complex where social standing is paramount. Queen Bee Ffion, who addresses her daughter in French in public places, sets the snobbish standard, and Alice is worried by the parents' competition to get their children into the prestigious Chelsea college rather than the despised local comprehensive school. Sarah McDonald even takes a job as a school secretary to stay in the thick of things. The fact is that Molly, Alice's daughter, is not an intellectual, having scored a meager 38% on her Chelsea mock run entrance exam. Alice panics, foreseeing her daughter living a life of prostitution, and decides to imitate Molly and take the exam herself.
