A story about the unexpected connection that develops between two people who write each other letters: Mary, an isolated child of eight years old who lives in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max, a seriously obese man of forty-four who lives in New York. In the middle of the 1970s, a plain and lonely Australian girl of eight years old picks a name out of a phone book in Manhattan and writes to him. She also adds a chocolate bar in her letter. He responds with a chocolate-covered letter. This is the beginning of a twenty-year exchange of letters. Will they ever come face to face with one another?
