Having escaped a Japanese POW camp and returned home to his Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania suburb, Ivan Bibic is plagued by nightmares. His childhood sweetheart, fellow ethnic Yugoslavian virgin Maria Bosic, remained his constant companion throughout his life. Captain Al Griselli's virtual engagement is jeopardized when she dates him once again, causing him to break off their engagement. They decide to marry despite Ivan's father's objections. Despite this, Ivan has become psychologically impotent, believes he is unworthy of her affection, and begins to wonder, even considering dating another woman. The smooth guitar and song busker, Clarence Butts, arrives in South-Western Pennsylvania and immediately seduces Maria.
