Mardock Scramble: The First Compression
Rune Ballot is a teen prostitute who lives on the streets of Mardock City. The following day, she is picked up by an ambitious casino manager named Shell, who lavishes her with every amenity possible. Ballot has been reborn by a false innocence, a false past, and now the false life Shell has provided her with, and she is grateful for all of it. She, on the other hand, can't help but be inquisitive about why he has done so much for her, so she uses a computer to conduct some background research on him. This turns out to be a blunder that will have far-reaching consequences for her future. When Shell discovers what she's done, he attempts to burn her to death by detonating a vehicle bomb in front of her.
