On August7,1974, Philippe Petit, a French tightrope walker, walked out on a high wire that had been illegally erected between New York's World Trade Center twin towers, which were at the time the world's tallest skyscrapers. When he was caught, he had already performed for over an hour on a wire 1,350 feet above the pavements of Manhattan.
