A man named Milan, who is played by Johnny Hallyday, gets off a train in a small French town. As he waits for the day he will rob the bank, he meets M. Manesquier, a retired poetry teacher (Jean Rochefort). The two men make an odd friendship and travel down the road not taken. Each of them wants to live the life of the other.
