A professor of literature at the University of Lausanne, Marc is in his forties and has a wife and three children. In spite of being single and living with his sister Marianne in a massive, isolated chalet that their parents gave them when they were children, Henri maintains a string of love affairs with his students while still in his twenties. When one of his most bright students, Barbara, mysteriously vanishes, it looks that winter has come to an end. Barbara's mother, Anna, approaches Marc two days later with the hope of learning more about her daughter, who has vanished.
