When Kit Kittredge's father loses his business and has to look for employment elsewhere, the Great Depression has an immediate and personal impact on the young girl. Kit, played by Academy Award candidate Abigail Breslin, is the protagonist of the very first "American Girl" theatrical film, which also features an outstanding ensemble. Kit and her mother are forced to take in boarders, sometimes known as paying house guests, so that they can continue to live in their home. These boarders turn out to have many wonderful stories to tell. Will, Kit's new hobo companion, becomes the leading suspect in the theft of her mother's lockbox, which contained all of their money. Kit is unable to accept the possibility that Will would steal, and her efforts to uncover the truth lead to her and her friends getting into significant difficulty.
