Iraqi insurgents loyal to Shiite leader Muktada As-Sadr launched an insurgency in the Polish zone on April 3, 2004, during the Ashura holiday. Lieutenant colonel Grzegorz Kaliciak led the Poles, Bulgarian soldiers, and Iraqi police in defending City Hall. The conflict grew to be the largest Polish engagement since World War II. A counter-attack killed about 80 insurgents, but no allied soldiers were killed.
