It Was a Faint Dream
The story takes place in Kyoto in the 13th century, when the Imperial court is under the sway of the clergy. Shijo was a poor girl who was sold as a concubine to a powerful daima. She becomes dissatisfied with her life of solitude and begins an affair with a State Councillor who also happens to be the brother of a retired Emperor. Realizing that she is nothing more than a pawn in the court's game, she decides to become a nun and travel the country.
