The story is set in a desolate mining town near Valencienne in northern France and focuses on one man's quest to revitalize his once-thriving community and its citizens. Philippe Torreton, who earned a César for Best Actor for his performance as Conan in Capitaine Conan, portrays Daniel, the principal of a nursery school in a demoralized town. Daniel is determined to bring life to the village despite all odds. Daniel chooses to take the law into his own hands when a parent who has come to pick up her children collapses on school grounds due to alcohol misuse and social services refuses to assist. His efforts are not in vain in the long run, despite the opposition of the locals.
