Lt. Dave Robicheaux, a detective in New Iberia, Louisiana, is attempting to establish a connection between the slaying of a local hooker and New Orleans gangster Julie (Baby Feet) Balboni, who is a co-producer of a film about the American Civil War. Robicheaux initiates a new inquiry at the same time Elrod Sykes, the star of the movie, reports finding another body in the Atchafalaya Swamp close to where the movie was filmed. Robicheaux believes the body to be the remains of a black guy who he saw being murdered 35 years earlier.
