"In the Bedroom" takes place during the summer on the coast of Maine and focuses on the interior dynamics of a family that is going through a shift. Dr. Matt Fowler lives in his home state of Maine, where he practices medicine. He is married to Ruth Fowler, who was born in New York and works as a music teacher. His son is having an affair with a local woman who is raising her son by herself. These protagonists find themselves in the thick of an unspeakable catastrophe just as the brief and fleeting beauty of Maine's summer comes to a close.
